One of the best things about this sabbatical travel has been having unstructured time with the kids. On a call last night, my friend, Meredith, reminded me just how rare this is in regular life where time inevitably fills up with soccer practice and homework and chores.
The kids are at an age where they are discovering more and more and making sense of it for themselves. The other day, I told Grayson "different strokes for different folks" and he looked at me like I was a genious.
Grayson has been exploring his sense of humor, trying out pun after pun, refining his dad jokes. The other day he saw this photo of our pork skewer lunch and declared "true pig tails"!
To be honest that is the only funny one I can remember...out of many many jokes. Most fall flat and he seems not to notice.
This afternoon we played Tien Len (a Vietnamese card game) for hours over smoothies and mango salad at the deck house overlooking the beach.
To extend our table stay, Trae ordered a latte. And when it arrived, the kids spotted a single accompanying cookie and eyed it.
"Are you going to eat that?" They asked with hope in their eyes.
Trae thought on it.
"Does a bear poop in the woods?" He replied.
Huh?
Ahhhh...Good one.
I'm starting to line up a tutor for our return to regular school and life. Poppy doesn't remember her multiplication table, and Grayson can't place a comma if his life depended on it. Experiential school and travel homeschool may have left some gaps this year. But this time of free play with them has been golden.
