When mom announced that we were going to a Thai cooking class, I felt really excited. We got to first go to a market and get ingredients and look around. Then we drove up to their farm. We looked at fruits and herbs that they were growing. We saw a sour eggplant which you put in some curries. We saw Kaffir limes (which smell really good), bananas, lemongrass, ginger, and this one flower that is used for the sticky rice to dye it. It is purple and it is called the butterfly pea flower. Our guide, Raata, did a magic trick for us. She rubbed the flower onto her palm and it turned purple. Then she cut open a lime and put the juice on and it turned pink!
We went back to the cooking area. Me and Charlie had to work with an adult because we were not old enough. So I worked with Dad. First, we started with soup. You got all the ingredients from the farm and market and started to cook. I did most of the stirring and some of the chopping and dad did the rest. I used a really big sharp knife. Me and dad chose spring rolls for our side dish, Grayson and mom made Pad Si-Ew. We had to mix up all the ingredients and stir fry them. Then you get a wrapper and roll up the food in the middle, you pinch each part, fold in the sides, put a little water on to stick it. Last you fry it to make the outside crispy. Then we got to eat. It was so good and crunchy.
Next, for our curry, me and dad made red curry. First, we got to get a mortar and a pestle to put all your spices into the bowl and smash it all for many minutes. You have to look away so it doesn’t get in your eyes. That makes the curry paste. Then you mix it with coconut milk and vegetables and herbs. It turns into your curry with lots of stirring. Mom accidentally mixed up the salt and sugar. She had to take it out and try to fix it!
Finally, we got to make sticky rice and mango. You get the sticky rice which is cooked in a bamboo basket to steam it. You add palm sugar, a little salt, and coconut milk died with the purple flower. You can make shapes if you want. Me and mom made hearts with ours. They give you half a mango cut in slices – kind of diced. It tasted really sweet and very fresh and professional.
The teacher went very fast. It was hard to keep up. So dad and I worked together to make sure all the things were done. This was my high from the trip because it was so fun to see the market and farm and cook all the stuff. -- Poppy
