Today Trae and I finally made it to the Dongmen market. Open only in the first half of the day, it hosts stall after stall of local vendors. Fruits, veggies, meat, tshirts, umbrellas, glassware, and more. The tiny alley ways lead from one stall to another and wind around to yet another intersecting alley. My goal was to buy delicious local fruit; mangos are in season and Jeff had told me about how delicious local Kyoho grapes taste. A fruit vendor seemed disinterested in us at first but then gladly sold us mangos, peaches, and the biggest bunch of large grapes. She even threw in a free bunch of bananas at the end! Writing the price on a scrap paper due to no shared language, I missed one digit and underpaid; the vendor helped me count out my bills. It wasn't until we walked away that we calculated the cost. I'd spent the equivalence of $40 for those grapes. I am on grape buying restriction from now on. We will savor every one. - Kim
