At Acton Academy, you are given the privilege to do one of the coolest things ever - lead a P.E. session (with a whistle!). To do this, you need to write an essay describing what game you're playing, how to play it, the equipment you will need for the game, safety instructions that you might to be aware of, the rules, and the set up for the teams. For the actual session, you must create a 5 minute warm up, including at least 3 stretches, two 10 minute drills that could help you with the game, and lastly, one 15 minute game. After I got my essay approved by the guide, and signed up for one of the PE days, I was ready to go with my basketball PE session. When the day finally arrived, it was very hot! We had to do our stretches in the shade, which didn't mess with my plan, but we also needed a lot more water breaks than expected, which messed with my timing a little. The first drill that I did was a passing exercise, which included about 4 people in a group passing the ball to each other with all the different types of passes. The next drill was layup lines, where there are two lines facing the basket on each elbow. The elbow is the spot on each end of the free throw line. Basically, the line on the right, will have the basketballs and will dribble up to the basket and execute a layup, while the other side will run the same pace to retrieve the ball if the other person misses. After we finished the drills, we did another water break then eventually started the game. After I broke up everybody into teams, I got the game rolling, and they were doing great for about 7 minutes when Mr. Stu (the guide) waved me over to tell me that time was up! I was supposed to make the game 15 minutes! Oops. Overall, I thought that my first PE session went great and so did my classmates as they approved my session as the very last step of the process. A couple weeks later, I did another PE session doing a game called "hit the pin". This time around I set a lot of timers on my watch so that I would not lose track of time. --coach GB
